Day 5 - Sunday 10th June - Mt Somers to Rakaia Gorge to Methven to Peel Forest to Grumpy’s Retreat campsite

Another day of lovely weather today, sunny but a cool winter breeze...frost on the ground this morning. A cccccold night!

We passed Rakaia Gorge on the way to Mount Somers on Friday but as it looked stunning thought we’d backtrack and go for a walk around the area. As we parked up, we acquired yet another friend..."Mr Bird" who was very tame and wanted to come in the van.

Gorgeous Gorge :) river canyon and 2 bridges and jet boats for those who could afford (not us!), lovely walk across the dry part of the wide river bed, but can imagine when the river bed is full of water and in full flow, quite a scary prospect. The river that is there is already very fastflowing.

Next onto the town of Methven where we resupplied our cupboards and went to the Information centre for more leaflets and advise on what to do in the area.

Onward to Peel Forest where we had an hours walk in the woods to a waterfall which we had to walk up a small stream-bed to get to. Quite muddy and wet underfoot though.

Our friend from day 2 “Mr Food” had told us that Grumpy’s Retreat just north of a town called Geraldine was a lovely campsite, where there was free wifi, good facilities and a free laundrette. As we arrived we met Grumpy who had his name badge on and he was actually somewhat friendly and delightful...and gave us a small discount on our stay.

Clothes are now hanging all over our campervan to dry off.
